Flavor of the Week #6

Vladislav Delay

( ;D --> Vladislav Delay, Uusitalo, Luomo, Conoco, Sistol. Under a raft of different names this Finnish artist (Sasu Ripatti *1976) has experimented with ambient, broken beat, glitch as well as grooves and house music with soulful vocals. In addition he has collaborated with and worked for a wide range of artists ranging from Scissor Sisters and Craig Armstrong to AGF, Black Dice, Massive Attack, Towa Tei and Ryuichi Sakamoto. While his side-projects and remixes are there to flirt with more stable rhythms and dancefloor institutions, his main love as well as his background is in experimenting with different kind of sounds and rhythms; a quest to find some music not heard yet. The soundtrack of Vladislav Delay. His forte is the rhythm, even if so subtle at times. In fact, he may as well be classified as a “percussionist” (actually he is originally a drummer) rather than an electronic musician despite the fact that that is how he mostly generates his sound and music, because it is the beat and its possibilities which lie closest to his heart, which further serves to explain why he has experimented with it from so many different musical angles.)

Human Decay
www.humandecay.de
( ;D --> Human Decay’s sound features a special mixture of various electronic, electric and body-music elements. thus it’s not limited on some simple e.b.m. clichés. techno elements are also an inherent part of our music as well as industrial-noise timbres. the output is the distillate of a electronic-music experience since 1996 so midtempo-tracks alternate with dance floor hits, intelligent tricky sounds rotating around straight’n’stomping beats. rhythmic skill and the variety of sound ideas combined with experimental beat constellations synthesizes into an elaborate body which is juxtaposed / contradicted / mixed up / completed with pretentious lyrics. fresh and invigorating „uncatchy” files are the outcome of the HD-framework so in this connection, the band does not really insist on momentary important ingredients of electronic music but is one of the worlds few music projects with the same incredibly crazy name from the very start ‘til the very present.)

( ;D --> Robert Lippok was born 1966 in Berlin.Since his youth, he was active in different formations as a musician, visual artist and set designer. The group called To Rococo Rot was founded in the 1990s together with Ronald Lippok, the brother of Robert Lippok, and Stefan Schneider from Dusseldorf.)
Redsuperstructure

( ;D --> Simple sonic events are unfolding themselves, evoking the sound of a Carl Orff children's ensemble. Pleasant and strange noises join a bass foundation that recreates the ground-shaking subsonic waves of mid-'90s drum n' bass. It's like a drum major meets a Tibetan monk. They try to do a dervish thing together, elegant and funky, which forcibly drags the slowest souls out of their torpor and forces them to run and jump. Loops radiate, something is bouncing, the universe steps out of an anti-academic cloud, into your mind and the unexplored regions of our sensibility. All is good in the noosphere with Redsuperstructure. Robert Lippok's new record is based on the spectacular set he performed at Raster-Noton Electric Campfire at Villa Massimo in September of 2010.)

Diskonnekted

www.diskonnekted.com
( ;D --> Stubborn and combative, Diskonnekted has always been fighting the stereotypical boundaries that separate the genres within the genres. Refusing to walk the line or to follow any leader, Diskonnekted floats somewhere between big electronic beats, spacy ambient layers, deep and dirty basslines and distorted grooves. Somewhere between heaven and hell, and soon somewhere between your ears. With Diskonnekted, Belgian artist Jan Dewulf uniquely combines progressive electro tunes with a broad spectrum of alternative dance styles ranging from EBM and big beats to industrial and tech-edged breaks. After having worked on a wide spectrum of previous projects enriched with the trademark Belgian EBM-sound, which often brought him comparisons to The Klinik, it was at the turn of the millennium that Diskonnekted was founded.)

Stars of the Lid
www.myspace.com/starsofthelid
( ;D --> Stars of the Lid is a duo specializing in drone-based ambient music. They list among their influences minimalist and electronic composers such as Arvo Pärt, Zbigniew Preisner, Gavin Bryars, and Henryk Górecki, as well as Talk Talk (both bands have tracks named "Taphead"), post-rock artists Labradford, and ambient innovator Brian Eno. Their songs are largely beatless soundscapes, composed of droning, effects-treated guitars along with piano, strings, and horns; volume swells and feedback fill the gap of rhythmic instruments, providing dynamic movement within the songs. Their sound has been described as "divine, classical drone without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals".)
