Flavor of the Week #36

.
Alex Banks

( ;D --> Alex Banks’ musical mission is going into overdrive. After building a hefty reputation via killer DJs sets across Europe and a few extraordinary remixes (Bonobo, Husky Rescue, Andreya Triana etc), he’s now signed to Monkeytown, the label owned by doyens of German electronic/club music, Modeselektor. His talents are showcased on the album, ‘Illuminate’. Two years in the making, it’s the culmination of Banks’ initial aspirations, at once rich in production artistry but ready for the dancefloor, seasoned with melodies and the leaping vocals of Gazelle Twin’s Elizabeth Bernholz, yet boasting a sonic heft and ambition on a par with the likes of Jon Hopkins, Daniel Avery and Nicolas Jaar.)

( ;D --> Chris Clark is an English electronic musician currently signed to Warp Records. With the 2006 release of Throttle Furniture, he shortened his artist name to Clark. Throttle Furniture and Body Riddle were both three years in the making, during which time Clark refined his sound considerably. His meticulous production style makes much use of manipulated live drum samples, which are used to construct complex beats. He performed with a live drummer (often Rob Lee aka Wax Stag).)

Oil 10

( ;D --> Since 1998, the French project Oil 10 has produced pure electronic tracks in which powerful, elegant and analogical sounds mix-up. Gilles Rossire shows that research doesn't always mean icy hermetism and achieves a terrific fusion between ambient and electro.  His approach can be explained by the diversity of his influences: essential first albums of Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno, LFO, Pan sonic, FSOL, Autechre, Dead Can Dance, the 80s electro pop scene (OMD, Freur, Fad Gadget, Ultravox, Depeche Mode...) and electronic heirs (IAMX, Goldfrapp, Ladytron,..).

Conrad Schnitzler
conrad-schnitzler.de
( ;D --> Conrad Schnitzler (1937–2011) is one of the most important representatives of Germany's electronic music avant-garde. A student of Joseph Beuys, he founded Berlin's legendary Zodiak Free Arts Lab, a subculture club, in 1967/68, was a member of Tangerine Dream and Kluster and also released countless solo albums. The yellow album contains recordings from the year 1974. It is not only amiable from start to finish, it also documents an important stage in Schnitzler’s musical development. This album reveals itself to be an important milestone, illuminating a clear path into the future. Schnitzler had begun to free himself from the constraints of orthodox conceptual art, advancing into the wide open spaces of uncharted musical territory. Reissue on CD/LP/DL out Nov 14, 2014.)

( ;D --> Anders Trentemoller has risen to the heights of international success usually only connected with artists in more mainstream Pop realms. His outstanding skills and talent for heart-wrenching melodic moments, fused with his trademark sound, have helped him gain fans across the globe, and blur the boundaries between cutting-edge, underground quality and mass appreciation.)
