Flavor of the Week #12

Plaid
( ;D --> One of my absolute favourite.)
www.plaid.co.uk
soundcloud.com/plaid-1
( ;D --> Plaid is a British electronic music duo comprising Andy Turner and Ed Handley, and based out of London. They are former members of The Black Dog and used many other names, such as Atypic (Andrew Turner) and Balil (Ed Handley), before settling on Plaid. They have collaborated with female singers Mara Carlyle, Nicolette and Björk. Although Plaid pre-existed the association, the duo's Ed Handley and Andy Turner spent most of their early recording years with Ken Downie as the dancefloor-confounding Black Dog Productions. Meshing well with Downie's vision of heavily hybridized post-techno and obscurantist thematics.)
Reachy Prints (Warp Records on the 19th May 2014 :D.)
warp.net/records/plaid/new-album-reachy-prints
( ;D --> Plaid's tenth album confirms their position at the vanguard of underground electronic music production incorporating the latest synthesis technologies in these compositions, whilst retaining their trademark emotive, yet playful, signature style present throughout their career. After 25 years together as Plaid, Andy Turner and Ed Handley are still true innovators within their field. This album, musically, feels like a journey into a subterranean world. 'Reachy Prints' continues the evolution in Plaid’s long nurtured sound - and reveals some of its hidden, most complex domains.)

( ;D--> Polymathic multimedia artiste Fatima Al Qadiri may have been brought up in Kuwait, but her forthcoming début full-length, Asiatisch, is instead inspired by “imagined China” – what of the Orient we (inclusive of Al Qadiri herself, having never been) see of it through our Westernised screens, lenses and so on. And in Szechuan, the first we’ve yet heard from the now Brooklyn-based producer’s upcoming release, we hear Asiatic mystique adroitly interwoven with twitching synth riffs, synthetic rhythms and attack music taken from These New Puritans’ seminal Hidden, this evocative auteur’s perception of the East thus filtered through certain tropes most commonly associated with this, the Occident. And you can in turn consider our intrigue piqued by this rather piquant introduction…)

Chainless
soundcloud.com/chainless
( ;D --> Chainless takes a leap towards a fast and otherworldly atmosphere while the undertone of his music remains foggy. Numbering synths fall right in place with thundering baselines. Chainless has recently worked on collaborations with IVVVO & 4bidden. His debut EP “Pandora’s Box” is due May 28th 2013.)

( ;D --> Nascent London label Cohort is kicking off its discography with the dark-palleted Grey Veils EP, the imprint's inaugural release by Libson-based producer Chainless. According to a press release, the aptly named producer aims to not be "bonded up to anything, not being bonded to a face or to a music genre." And he succeeds with mysterious EP cut "Ancient Ruins"; the shadowy piece features an arrangement of percussion and choppy, ritualistic vocal bits which are held together with intense synth tones. The rest of Chainless' disquieting Grey Veils EP will appear on March 31.)

Mushy

mushy.bandcamp.com/
( ;D --> Mushy is the solo project of Valentina Fanigliulo, a sound-experimentalist rising from the dusty ruins of Rome, the eternal city. Since 2003, Mushy’s style combines and synthesizes electronica, shoegaze, blues and new-wave, with a psychedelic/kraut soul. Her soundscape-like compositions reveal a spellbinding universe that emerges from the mixture of analog drum-machines, burgeoning cold drones, tempestuous noises and spectral chants. Mushy has been deeply inspired by the works of Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Slowdive, Lush, Minimal Compact, New Order, Swans, Nico, and legendary singers Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Mushy’s debut album, ‘Faded Heart’,  has been released by Italian underground label Mannequin Records on Feb 2011. It’s an album recorded essentially at home and its lo-fi charms derives from the amalgamation of obsessive drum-machine loops, synths and an effect-processed old and battered acoustic guitar, found in a flea market with only 4 strings. Mushy considers ‘Faded Heart’ as her personal take on blues. The album was picked as Rough Trade’s Album Of The Week, in March 2011 and was described as the most convincing European answer to contemporaneous releases by American artists such as Zola Jesus and Tamaryn.)
